Using Technology Redemptively and Missionally
How do you use artificial intelligence (AI)?
At Seed Company, we’re driven to intentionally use AI for redemptive and missional purposes. Besides the obvious benefit that it saves time in translating Scripture, here are some other ways you may not realize that AI is shaping the Bible translation movement:
1. AI is helping us make translation tools.
Not only is AI integrated into a lot of new Bible translation software—it also helps develop new tools. With AI’s ability to produce code, computer programmers can experiment with and test tools faster than before, adapt them in ways that work for different language contexts, and share them with communities in need. 2. AI is refining our process.
As AI speeds up translation drafting, it is also stretching personnel capacity, forcing translation teams to reimagine other parts of the process. The possibility of more Scripture being produced in less time is exciting for those waiting for access to God’s Word. But we want to ensure that we maintain quality on the road to all Scripture for all people. That requires us to be more innovative in our approaches, reconsidering systems and trainings to avoid bottlenecks and address challenges posed by drafts being produced more quickly.

3. AI is capturing community history and culture.
For AI to work in translation, it needs to pull from a database of language information. But smaller language communities that want the Bible often lack written and digital resources that could feed the models. So, AI comes with an unexpected benefit. While it can accelerate the launch of translation projects in these regions, it also motivates people to capture traditional stories and document pieces of their history to fuel the AI engine. Their unique communities—valued by God—are being preserved and celebrated in the process.
4. AI is encouraging multimodal Scripture engagement.
Bible translation does not only result in written books. The Bible can take on many forms depending on the specific needs of the language group. In communities where reading and writing isn’t common, listening to Scripture in an audio format gives more people the chance to meet God through His Word. For Deaf populations that use sign language, video translation is significant. AI is providing new ways for these formats to be incorporated, changing how translators think throughout the process and unlocking opportunities for faster Scripture production in a variety of modes. All so people can engage with God’s Word in the ways that will resonate most.
5. AI is allowing us to focus on what only humans can do.
While AI gets better at doing tasks machines can do, it’s giving teams more space to do what only humans can:
— Study the Bible and wrestle with theological issues and cultural questions
— Grow in their personal relationships with Christ
— Point others in their community to Him
As we seek to steward innovation faithfully, we thank God for how He is using technology to help us bring all Scripture to all people.
