A Series of Christmas Devotions Reflecting on the Incarnational Ministry of Bible Translation
“For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.” — 1 Peter 1:23 (NIV)
Faith is the difference between being buried and being planted.
When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, he predicted His imminent crucifixion, saying, “Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds” (John 12:24 NIV).

One seed, a seemingly small resource, can grow into a much larger source of life, multiplying the initial blessing into an abundant harvest. But first, it needs to be planted: a worthwhile sacrifice if you believe a positive outcome will result.
God knew it would, so He sent His Son to be that Seed. Jesus died but rose again, bringing new life that is offered to us. This is the gospel message, the good news that encompasses the entire story we find ourselves in.
We don’t have to just be buried. We can be planted.
The apostle Peter spoke to this same reality when, quoting Isaiah, he proclaimed that people wither like grass, but God’s Word endures like an incorruptible seed. Because of this Word, we can be reborn by trusting in the Seed who was buried in a garden, planted to be the firstfruits of the resurrection.
Now, we are called to lay down our lives for eternal gain. The Scripture that was preached to us produces life. Life that flourishes, thrives, and bears the fruit of holiness, obedience, and love. Life that does not end, because it comes from an imperishable Seed.
A Question to Ask Yourself: What does it look like in my life to be planted rather than buried?
Why does this matter to Bible translation?
