“… if one member is honored, all rejoice together” (1 Corinthians 12:26, ESV).
What immediately comes to mind when you think of Bible translators? It probably isn’t a technical specialist fixing a router, managing a server, or updating software licenses. However, for most Bible translation projects, someone is working meticulously behind the scenes. Information Technology (IT) is essential as we work to ensure everyone has access to the fullness of God’s Word in their heart language through our Vision ASAP—All Scripture, All People.
Many of our Global Translation Leaders (GTLs) are part of capacity building training programs and quietly ensure the technology never inhibits a community from realizing that God speaks their language. You may not always hear about their efforts in stories from the field, but, without them, we wouldn’t have a story to tell.
Today, we’d like to give you a glimpse into the work of just a few of these important translation leaders.
From Papua New Guinea…
In Papua New Guinea (PNG), Toros is a help-desk technician. Whenever the Bible Translation team has a problem with a computer, phone, or printer, he solves it. If the network drops, Toros knows what to do to keep the team on track.
Like so many of those involved in Bible translation, he has advanced training in business information technology and a certificate in network security. He is also receiving training in language software, and using his expertise to increase the national capacity to serve translation projects in PNG.
To Tanzania…
Bonane didn’t set out to be an IT professional for Bible translation. He found his way there in 2014, after witnessing something that reshaped the rest of his life: Tanzanian people reading Scripture in their heart language for the first time, and the joy on their faces when they did.
As he completes his bachelor’s degree in computer science, Bonane facilitates the translation management software, keeping projects across multiple language clusters organized and moving. Not only that, but he continues developing new systems to increase efficiency, teaching computer literacy to translators, creating instructional manuals and training videos—all the while working to make Bible translations available online.
Bonane doesn’t see any of this as separate from the mission.
“Bible translation is one of the implementations of Jesus’ command to preach the gospel to every people of all languages and all races. I have been able to see Bible translation in a mother tongue bring understanding and to change people’s lives by helping them to believe in Jesus and rely on God. … My role is to carry out the important tasks I have to help the Bible translation team to be efficient enough.”
To Timor-Leste.
In Timor-Leste, James is not only a member of the IT team, but also on the translation team as well! He graduated with his bachelor’s degree in computer and informatics techniques in 2017, a milestone he credits entirely to God’s grace.
For a long time, James attended church without fully trusting his life to Christ. “Under God’s grace, in 2009, I started to attend a Bible study and prayer group, where I felt God talking to me, which made me want to learn more and get closer to the Lord.” He’s now actively involved in serving his church, while professionally contributing to translation work.
For the last six years, James has contributed his IT talents to the Bible Translation team, helping them supply Scripture to every language community in Timor-Leste. He has described reading Scripture in his heart language as pure joy; currently, he’s translating the book of Ruth into his own mother tongue, Raklungu.
And Nearly Every Bible Translation Team…
The body of Christ is not made up of interchangeable parts, ranked by visibility. As Paul writes, “If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything? But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it” (1 Corinthians 12:17-18, NLT).
The next time you hear about a community receiving Scripture in their heart language, remember that, someone like Toros, Bonane, or James is working quietly behind the scenes, solving a technical problem to meet a spiritual need. Each of these individuals are part of our Global Translation Leaders program, working through a specified training program with a mentor and accountability checkpoints. To
